Missing You

ANDY, MARY, AND JULIAN were gone by the time Banjo was done with his dental procedure. He collected his only carry case from Kiko, said his goodbyes, and was off.

In the hospital lobby, a nervous young American Marine was waiting. Banjo had a feeling that he was his ride home to Base and, as it turned out, he was right. The trooper stood to attention, approached Banjo and said, ‘Good afternoon, Sir. I’m Private Cahill. I’m here to drive you back to Fort Irwin.’

Banjo’s eyebrow went up. No-one knew he was discharging himself today except Anna, the night nurse, Kiko, Andy, Mary, and by extension Julian. He doubted any of them had enough clout to get him a ride home. Banjo shook his head and mumbled to himself. Nonetheless, he smiled with gratitude. ‘First, could you drop me somewhere I can buy a phone?’

‘Yes, Sir!’

‘It’s Cameron,’ he said. ‘Sir isn’t on my birth certificate.’

The young Marine smiled, finally at ease.

Cahill drove him to a suburban mall. They got out to browse for a phone in a shop that should have been called ‘Phones R Us’. The sheer number of the devices, the selection of brands and designs, made his head hurt. But he couldn’t be without a phone. When he’d given his smartphone to Andy to operate as an iPod, he removed the SIM card. The last thing he wanted was for her to receive calls from the mob back home, especially the foul-mouthed Billy.

Having picked up a replacement iPhone, they were off again for Fort Irwin. Banjo fiddled with the gadget, inserting the SIM card and dialling Ben’s number, who answered quickly. The younger sibling pretended to be annoyed. ‘What have you done, huh? Turned the nurses into spies?’

Ben laughed. ‘Did no such thing. They offered their services, to keep an eye on you.’

‘Bullshit!’ He opened the window and leaned back on the passenger seat. He felt the breeze on his face as the car travelled at a leisurely eighty miles per hour on a country road of endless brown earth, with just occasional patches of green to break the monotony.

‘Banjo, listen to me. I need you to get strong. We need you to be a hundred percent. I can’t say much more than that.’ There was an undertone to Ben’s voice. Is it possible they’d use me for a rescue mission?

He didn’t dare hope. Surely the military wouldn’t send a third brother to the same hellhole, not if the powers-that-be could help it? It wasn’t like they had no other choice; the American and Australian had deep benches of helo pilots to select from. Not possible. But he kept his fingers crossed. So ... maybe.

‘What’s with Duck and 4 Squadron?’

Ben tutted before answering. ‘Everything is being done to get to them back.’

‘Does that mean they’ve met up? Come on, level with me! I’m not the schoolboy you left behind at home. I’m a big boy.’

‘Yes, as far as my intelligence gathering goes. But, they’re far from in the clear yet.
